The Sunday Sermon: Abraham and Isaac

By the Reverend Sally Weaver

In today’s reading from Genesis, God tells Abraham to take Isaac, the son he waited his whole life for, bind him, kill him, and burn him as a sacrifice to God.  Abraham has already banished his son Ishmael.  Now he prepares to murder his other son.

In the 18th chapter of Genesis, Abraham learns that God is going to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their great wickedness. Appalled that good people could perish with the wicked, Abraham engages in energetic and prolonged negotiations with God to gain God’s promise not to destroy innocent, righteous people.

And yet, when God tells Abraham to kill his beloved son Isaac, his sole remaining heir, Abraham does not say a word.  There is no argument -- not even a conversation -- with God.  Abraham says nothing to his wife Sarah.  During the 3 days’ journey to Moriah, Abraham shares no hint of what is to come with his intended victim Isaac.  Instead, Abraham calmly loads the wood on Isaac’s back with which to immolate his son.  Abraham builds an altar, lays out the wood, binds his son, and raises his knife to butcher him.  At that point we’re told that God decides Abraham has passed the test.  Abraham’s hand is stayed and a ram is sacrificed in place of Isaac.

The Sunday Sermon: A Matter of Life and Death

Editor's note: We usually get the Sunday sermon posted on Sunday evening. As it was Father's Day on Sunday, Deacon Kevin had family priorities. We're happy to publish his sermons anytime, though...!
By the Reverend Kevin McGrane
There are so many things going on in today’s gospel that speak to our times that I was not sure where to begin today’s message. I did manage, though.
Think about it for a second. Jesus first addresses our essential equality as disciples and Jesus followers. There is no master/slave relationship among us. We are all, equally, loved and hated for being his disciples.
This speaks directly to the racism in our society and in our church. We are all supposed to be brothers and sisters in Christ, and there is to be no caste system in our church or in our society.
Then Jesus says that the once hidden things among us will be revealed in the light of day, even in the light of faith, which speaks directly to the history of racism and violence that we have hidden for generations.  And now it’s finally being revealed.
