Adult Christian Formation Offerings Sunday, February 5, 9:00 am (1) To Travel Together - To Travel Together... is a 10 week workshop developed to help people incorporate into our church. People who are new to St. John's, who want to be baptized, confirmed, received or reaffirmed form a group with each other, deepening their faith in Jesus Christ. Partly instructional, the workshop covers basic Book of Common Prayer practices. Partly a support group, the workshop develops relationships with each other by sharing our faith stories. The goal is to allow us to be more comfortable with other as we travel together beyond this workshop. To Travel Together will begin Sunday, January 8, at 9:00 am in the Chapel. Subsequent meeting dates: February 5, February 12, February 19, February 26, March 4, March 11, and March 18. If you are interested in being baptized, confirmed, received, or re-affirming your baptismal vows, those ceremonies will take place at the Great Vigil at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, April 7. For more information about "To Travel Together," contact Jeffrey Deutsch at jeffreydeutsch@charter.net.
(2) Adult Christian Formation Series for 2/5, 2/12, and 2/19 - meets in the Parish Hall (There is no Adult Christian Formation on 1/29 due to the Annual Meeting) We will be using the text “Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry”. There will be 10 books available for anyone who is interested in “checking it out” by calling Dave Malek at 314-776-5152. Those planning to attend will be encouraged to pre-read a portion of the text before each meeting. We will take two sessions to discuss each of the three topics. The approach will be an informal, facilitated discussion of the text over 6 weeks. About the text: “Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry” is the product of study and conversation by the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches, including twenty years reviewing various drafts and culminating in the approval of the document in its present form at a meeting in Lima in 1982. The document is in three sections, each in numbered paragraphs, with some sparse additional commentary. In the years since its release, it has influenced the ecumenical conversation among churches, as well as liturgical reform and doctrinal development within churches. If there is any modern document that can claim to have an influence approaching that of the Apostolic Fathers of the early church, this is it!

If you have a Prayer Request to add to the list, please e-mail Pastor Teresa at teresa@towergrovechurch.org, too. Thanks!

St. John's Soups are now at City Greens (1202 Boyle Avenue near Manchester). City Greens is a produce market, with the goal to get produce into the kitchens of all families. Families that make under $30,000 per year shop for free. Otherwise, families pay a subscription fee of $125. Last year, Catholic Charities Community Services-Midtown piloted a successful farmers' market which served about 200 families and purchased produce from a group of 27 small Missouri farmers. Staff deliver fruits and vegetables to 100 home-bound seniors. On-site nutrition education and cooking demos, music and other entertainment are all part of the plan for this year. Elementary-aged youth attending Father Tolton's free summer program have already connected with Metro High School science-achievers to learn how to grow fresh flowers and herbs and will sell products grown at the centers' markets. The City Greens Market at the Midtown Center will occur on Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM and on the first Saturday of every month: 8:30 AM -11:30 AM. Thanks to Jeffrey Deutsch for making this partnership possible!
St. John's is now part of the eScrip program at Schnucks Markets, which means that if you register an eScrip card at Schnucks then a certain percentage of all purchases automatically comes to St. Johns every time you use that card. It is very easy to do this online. Go to http://www.escrip.com/merchants/identity/schnucks/customer_escrip.jsp and follow the directions. Under the name of organization, type in "St. John's Episcopal" and then you enter all the other info that is requested. This is a very easy fundraiser and hopefully will help our income for 2011.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Rafanan on: Housing First - Ending Homelessness in St. Louis Congregations in our area will join together to host Martin Rafanan at Compton Heights Christian Church (Disciple of Christ), 2149 S. Grand Blvd. St. Louis 63104, on Sunday, February 19 at 2:30 pm to talk about the network and processes in place to help us address homelessness. Chilcare will be provided. We want this ecumenical/inter-faith event to reach as many pastors and congregations as possible. We are also inviting the parish nurse community to join us that day.
From the Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Foster, pastor of Compton Heights Christian Church: All of our congregations encounter men, women, and families who are homeless and seeking help of some kind. Very often we struggle to know how to respond in ways that are ultimately helpful and will address the core issues. Recently I had a lengthy conversation with the Rev. Dr. Martin Rafanan who is the Director of Gateway 180 Shelter in St. Louis. I came out of that conversation with knowledge and hope about the direction of St. Louis City's approach to getting people out of shelters and into stable housing and addressing the multi-layered life-issues that perpetuate homelessness. Over the last 3 years a significant change of direction has taken place. This is vital for all of us: First, because it puts the tools in our hands to respond to those who come to us seeking help - both those who are homeless AND those who are on the verge of becoming homeless! And second, because there are creative ways our congregations can be involved in outreach.
A Diocesan-wide workshop designed to promote dialog and actions toward healing and reconciliation. On Saturday, February 11th, the Dismantling Racism Commission debuts a new program resource for diocesan parishes--Seeking Our Past, Creating Our Future. Bishop Wayne has shared with us his concern that our diocese be actively involved in efforts for racial recon-ciliation, and healing in our community. At his address to our 2010 diocesan convention, he tasked the dismantling racism commission with helping to imagine how we might envision that in this diocese. The Commission has concluded, and our bishop agrees, that our church cannot effectively engage the broader community in efforts toward exploring our common history, open dialogue, and reconciliation and healing, until we engage in the same process internally. To that end, the commission has developed an outline for parish use: to explore their past; create avenues for open and honest dialogue; and work together with prayer and mutual support to create a more open, accessible, and welcoming Episcopal Church. Packets have been prepared for each congregation in the diocese which contain materials and exercises for congregations to use as a resource in this work. The packages will first be distributed at the yearly Absalom Jones and Richard Allen Celebration, Saturday, February 11 at Christ Church Cathedral. Also on the program is freedom rider Rip Patterson. The 11th is a busy day in the life of this diocese, and while it is hoped that many parishes can send participants, for those that cannot the commission members will be contacting you, delivering materials, and available to talk to forums or serve as a resource during this work. A couple of congregations have already begun this project and will be an additional resource for the diocese. Childcare will be provided. Please RSVP if you need childcare - see RSVP information below.

God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality Thursday, February 23, 7pm – 9pm
WhereCentral Reform Congregation, 5020 Waterman, off of S. Kingshighway, in the Sanctuary
DescriptionMichaelson underscores that the Hebrew Bible and Christian scriptures emphasize the importance of love, compassion, and equality. From this starting point, he argues that the moral principles in these texts favor acceptance of gays and lesbians, outweighing the handful of ambiguous verses so often cited by conservatives. For information on purchasing Michaelson's book, God vs. Gay, with proceeds benefiting CRC, go to www.centralreform.org. CRC Members Michael Getty and Brian Vetruba are bringing Jay Michaelson to CRC for their bar mitzvah project. Jay Michaelson is the author of three books and two hundred articles on religion, sexuality, and law, and a leading religious advocate for the sexual minorities whose work has been featured in the New York Times, NPR and CNN. Michaelson holds a JD from Yale and an MA in Religious Studies from Hebrew University, and has taught at Boston University Law School, Yale University, and religious and cultural institutions around the country. In 2009, he was included on the “Forward 50” list of the most influential Jewish leaders in America.

The City has installed new signs to help improve St. John's parking. There are now "two hour" parking signs on both sides of Arsenal Street on Sunday mornings from 8:00 am - 12:30 pm, so that St. John's has more parking available on Sunday mornings. If you stay 3 hours or so, that is fine; the signs are intended to prevent people from parking in those spots overnight. If you are able to do so, please do continue to park on the north side of Arsenal or on Spring so that the spots directly in front of St. John's are available for visitors, newcomers, and those who cannot walk very far.
